Why Did I Get Married

Nov 4, 2026

Getting married wasn’t on my wish list when I was younger. I had seen so many failed marriages and so much infidelity that it just wasn’t something I was willing to voluntarily make a part of my life.

It’s crazy how things happen.

I met my wife at Burger King, of all places. And to make the story even crazier, I was actually on my way to call another girl when I walked past her.

She asked me if I could help jump-start her car, and I told her I couldn’t because I didn’t have jumper cables. My mind was somewhere else.

But as I was walking back from the phone booth, I looked over and saw her beauty.

It’s crazy how just a few minutes earlier, I had been completely distracted.

We started out rocky. I mean, our first three or four conversations ended in arguments. 😂 Which I thought was pretty crazy for two people who had just met and were trying to get to know each other.

But somehow, we figured it out.

My wife has been by my side through the successes and failures of my businesses. Everywhere I went, she was right there with me. She was part of the journey, until her health eventually got to the point where she couldn’t walk anymore.

And when Unapologetic started taking off, she stepped in and mastered the systems behind shipping and fulfillment. She wasn’t just standing on the sidelines cheering me on. She was right there, helping build the business.

As I’m writing this, we’re about 10 days away from celebrating our 29th wedding anniversary.

We’ve been empty nesters for well over 14 years. We have three grown children and one beautiful granddaughter.

It’s crazy to be with someone for that long, especially when you consider that we were together for years before we even got married.

I look at her today, and she’s 49, still beautiful, still witty, and still speaks her mind. 😂

We disagree on something every day. Sometimes a couple of times a day. We talk through the whole thing, and sometimes it’s super uncomfortable.

I can’t totally speak for her, but I think we see marriage for what it is: two people who genuinely like each other, two people serving God and serving each other.

I also think about everything we’ve been through together.

We’ve experienced having an excessive amount of money. We’ve experienced having no money and having to stay with family.

There was a time when she limped for over 10 years without knowing why, until it got to the point where she couldn’t walk at all.

There were also times when I got extremely sick, including in 2021, when my eye doctor told me I was legally blind.

There’s way too much to cover in one blog about being together for over 30 years.

But, man, I am grateful.

I’m grateful to be able to sit down and remember these things. I’m grateful to actually do life with someone. Someone who genuinely loves me.

So no, I don’t know why I got married. I didn’t fully understand covenant or everything that came with marriage when I made that decision.

But I sure am glad I got married. And I’m especially glad I married her.
